I’ve been thinking about giving the old Hortal.com a facelift for quite a while. As much as I was proud of the graphic design skills that took to put the old avatar-centric layout together, and the week-or-so of coding that it took to wrestle the theme into its final shape, it had started to really annoy me. The font size was a bit too small, the color scheme was very wrong (clear text on a dark background!) and it wasn’t responsive so it had to use a plugin to render well on mobile devices, losing all visual continuity.
The old design was no longer Appropriate for someone like me, who goes on and on about the need to understand and invest in the quality of the front end technology behind the user experience, and about the need for accessibility and standards to take centre stage.
Finally I found the time so new year, new site. I hope you all like it. If you do, please let me know. If you don’t, what would you improve?

Much tidier but still some glitches on menu links to home function

Glitch sorted. I blame WordPress’ silly Menu system, which uses hardcoded URLs for Home instead of the
wpurl
variable. Thanks!.
